Juilin, " she asked hesitantly, "what were you going to do with the salt and cooking oil? Not exactly, " she added more quickly. "Just a general idea." He looked at her for a moment. "I do not know. But they did not, either. That is the trick of it; their minds made up worse then I ever could. I have seen a tough man break when I sent for a basket of figs and some mice. Robert Jordan
About This Quote

Jules Verne was describing the men of the French ship, "Ile de France" who took on an English warship. The Ile de France was a frigate, not a large man-of-war like "Dunkerque". The men of the Ile de France were insistent that they would not surrender to the English and that they would fight until their ship sank. When Captain D'Aoust told them that he would give them one hour to weigh anchor and prepare for fight, they refused and D'Aoust ordered his first lieutenant, Juilin, to open fire.

Juilin had no experience as a commander and his first move was to close all hatches and turn off the lights so as to thwart any enemy boarding attempts. He also opened up with all guns and because his crew were inexperienced sailors, many of them died as they watched the other side's ships flee.
